3. More on PD
After the successful workshop conducted by Dianne
Parslow in Geelong last week, a similar session will be conducted in Moe and Footscray
(see item 1)
The CGEA Practical Matters Workshops bring the 2007 VALBEC program of Professional
Development to a close in November.
Thank you to all members and non members who have supported the Twilight Forums,
Annual conference, Spring Forum and Practical Matters workshops we have conducted
throughout the year. Thanks again to all our presenters and the VALBEC committee
members who work behind the scenes to stage these events.
We are always on the lookout for suggestions for content and venues so send your
ideas to info@valbec.org.au to
assist us with planning for 2008.

4. Adult Literacy and Lifeskills Survey (ALLS)
At the end of November, the results of the Adult
Literacy and Lifeskills Survey (ALLS) will be released in Australia. A similar survey
was carried out in 1996 and the results showed that approximately 6.2 million adult
Australians had inadequate literacy skills to cope with the demands of everyday life
and work. We now have the chance to compare the situation ten years later. If Canada
is any indication, the results will be similar to 1996. We have an opportunity to
remind the community and the government of the levels of funding required to provide
access to quality programs for all adult learners. We need to get our message out
in the public arena. We know the importance of adequate literacy and numeracy skills
for a healthy, productive society. We need to tell others how important it is.
In the lead up to the federal election, ACAL, VALBEC and other state organizations
will be lobbying politicians to raise awareness across governments and in the wider
community of the need to expand funding and provision. Check the ACAL website and
Literacy Link for more information and how you can become involved. The ALLS is available
at http://www.acal.edu.au/

5. Bachelor of Adult Learning and Development
This degree course is designed to support
staff in training organisations to make complex judgements, develop customised
training for industry clients, and meet the needs of learners
with diverse learning styles and expectations. Delivered by experienced staff
in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, the Bachelor of Adult Learning
and Development course builds on teaching professionals’
existing qualifications through recognition of prior learning (RPL), and helps
position your organisation for future challenges and opportunities with forward-thinking
practitioners. The course is a three-year degree that can be completed in two with
RPL. It is delivered through flexible mode with course content and assessment
programmed to add value to participant’s work-based activities. Please
