1. Living Literacies - 2007 VALBEC Conference,
Friday, May 4 at the William Angliss College, LaTrobe Street, Melbourne.
The conference and pre-conference workshop have been heavily subscribed. Thanks to those who got their registrations in so promptly. The program looks exciting but if you can’t make to hear our guest speaker Margaret Somerville (http://www.valbec.org.au/05/conf07/07workshops.htm) you can join in a letter event via the ACAL literacy Live Forum (see below).

Annual General Meeting
Members are invited to attend and hear reports on the 2006 VALBEC year and elect their representatives for the coming year. The agenda for the AGM is to receive reports and elect new office bearers. Members will have received a notification in the mail.

Consider what you can do for VALBEC and what VALBEC does for you!
Are you a committed, active and informed practitioner? Do you enjoy engaging in dialogue with colleagues over a meal and a glass of wine? Do you have strong ideas about how the adult literacy, basic education and numeracy fields have evolved and should continue to develop? Then consider “stepping up” to join the VALBEC committee at the AGM. The VALBEC committee is a dynamic and collaborative group who meet once a month to discuss, plan and take action on behalf of members and the ALBE field.
VALBEC is always open to new members on the committee so consider nominating yourself or a colleague to join this energetic and hard working group.

4. ACAL’s Literacy Live Forums
The Literacy Live Forums take place online in a virtual meeting room. Participants log-in and join in discussions or listen to speakers. Michael Coghlan has been facilitating these and most have been filled to our room limit of 20.
The next forum is on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at 8.00 pm AEST at your place.
Margaret Somerville, Professor of Education (Learning and Development) at Monash University Gippsland
, is the key note speaker at the VALBEC state conference on May 4. In this online forum she will continue her conversation about "New literacies, new selves."

Fine Print will be in member mailboxes about now. Fine Print is only sent to members.
The Editorial Group meeting Wednesday May 30th 6.00- 7.00 pm at Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre; 20 Princes St Carlton North.

7. ACAL Conference in New Zealand – ‘The Power of And’
The Langham Hotel, Auckland, New Zealand, 28-29 September 2007
Readers are encouraged to submit proposals for presentations to the ACAL conference being held in New Zealand in September. Visit the ACAL web site http://www.acal.edu.au for a link to the conference web site. A 'call for papers' section of the web site will be available shortly.
Papers should
* Provoke critical thinking and discussion
* Highlight effective teaching and learning
* Reflect on innovation and risk taking
* Encourage dialogue between different sectors and groups
* Engage participants in interactive learning experiences
* Examine social change and adult literacy
* Link research, evaluation and practice.
After the conference, presentations or a synopsis may be published in Literacy Link or loaded on to the ACAL web site. Some may also be published in Fine Print, journal of the Victorian Adult Literacy and  Basic Education Council (VALBEC).
Note that all accepted presenters must register to attend the conference.

8. DIY Housing CGEA Literacy Resource now available
Winner of the Innovation in ACE Learning Award for 2006 DIY Housing is now available.
The resource, details presented at 2006 VALBEC Conference, is a teacher friendly resource relevant to the
new Certificates in General Education for Adults.
DIY Housing provides ten specific sections of work. Included are sample lesson plans and worksheets for lower and upper levels, plus a myriad of further activities that can be developed in the topics linking work levels to the CGE A.
The worksheets are easily photocopiable (spiral bound) providing a very user friendly resource for teachers.
The resource is the first of a series of three the other two DIY Gardening and DIY Cooking available later this year and early next year.
