"In order to survive in today's globalised world, it has become necessary for all people to learn new literacies and develop the ability to locate, evaluate and effectively use information in multiple manners" (United Nations action plan 2003-2012 Literacy Decade. United Nations 2002, p4)
In step with the rhythm of the times, the 2006 VALBEC conference questions the place of adult literacy and numeracy in 21st century contexts.
* How does the demand for multi-literacies affect the workplace, the worker and the adult learner?
* Are new paradigms and methodologies being developed to meet these demands?
* Is there an urgency for practitioners to reposition literacy in the rhetoric of government and institutions.
* Are we any closer to achieving greater access and equity for all?
* Do we keep alive the language of human and social capital or have times changed?
* How do we encompass in our practice the literacies of the full range of domains: personal, community, economic and workplace?
* Just what does the adult literacy learner need right here, right now?
These key questions will drive the discussions and dialogues at the 2006 conference.
